Discussions on the prospects for the reintegration of the Transnistrian region in the context of the Republic of Moldova’s European integration path

On Friday, 23 May 2025, during the Black Sea and Balkans Security Forum in Bucharest, @Iulian Groza, Executive Director of #IPRE, moderated a special session focused on the reintegration prospects of the Transnistrian region in the context of Moldova’s European integration path and the security challenges posed by Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The event was organised by the Institute for European Policies and Reforms (IPRE), in partnership with the @New Strategy Center in Bucharest, and continued the reflections initiated at the Moldova Reintegration Forum held in 2024.

Distinguished speakers included:

• Igor Grosu, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova
• Ambassador Michaël Roux, Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, France
• Ambassador Cristian Diaconescu, Presidential Advisor for National Security, Romania
• Vadym Halaichuk, Deputy Chair, Committee on Ukraine’s Integration into the EU, Verkhovna Rada
• Dr. Adam Eberhardt, Deputy Director, Centre for East European Studies, University of Warsaw

The discussion took place at a defining moment for the Republic of Moldova, as the country advances steadily on its path toward EU membership, in an increasingly unstable regional environment shaped by Russia’s aggression and growing hybrid threats. One of the main conclusion of the session was that the reintegration of Transnistrian region remains a strategic objective for the Repbulic of Moldova, one that requires a gradual approach based on leveraging economic interdependence created through closer ties with the EU, strengthening internal resilience, and securing coordinated international support for the reintegration proces and countering external interference.
